Fake Bulgarian passports, ID cards, forged documents, weapons and huge amounts of currency were found during a mass police operation conducted by the Turkish security services.

The raid has been carried out simultaneously in Istanbul, Izmir and Edirne. 8 people have been arrested, believed to be part of a crime group dealing with human trafficking, the Bulgarian National Radio, BNR, reports.

Some members of the group, however, managed to escape. The detainees have been transferred to the jail in Edirne, where they will face the judge.

Fake Iraqi passports have also been discovered during the raids.

The authorities are probing ties between the busted gang and accomplices in other countries. Border police is on high alert.

On Wednesday, 13 police employees and 4 Commissars from the Istanbul Passport Services for Foreigners at the Security Police Directorate were arrested over suspicions in involvement in illegal traffic of women from Russia, Moldova, Bulgaria and Romania.

The operations are part of the efforts to increase control and step up fight against corruption, the Turkish officials inform.
