Bulgaria: Bulgaria Hints It Needs US Missile Shield Because of Iran, Russia Confused Bulgaria's Foreign Ministry has notified Russia it was not in any talks with the US over the missile shield in Europe. Photo by BGNES

Bulgaria’s Foreign Ministry formally replied to a note of the Russian government that no official talks had been held for locating elements of the US missile defense in Europe on Bulgarian soil.

This is how the Bulgarian Foreign Ministry replied to the inquiry it received Thursday night from Russia.

In its reply, Bulgaria’s Foreign Ministry states further that “the acquisition of nuclear and missile capabilities in violation of the non-proliferation agreements by state, as well as by terrorist networks, is one of the most serious threats to collective security.”

Thus, even though the letter mentions no countries or further specifics, it seems to allude that the US missile defense in Europe might be needed in order to help cope with the above-mentioned threats.

The Bulgarian Foreign Ministry also seems to hint to Iran, which is suspected by Western states as pursuing nuclear weapons, especially as the USA has formally stated that its missile defense in Europe is supposed to shield its European allies from Iranian missiles.

The Ministry says that as a NATO member, Bulgaria would continue to adhere to the joint approach of taking decisions in the security field, including as far as missile defense is concerned.

Earlier on Friday, the Spokesperson of the Russian Foreign Ministry, Sergei Nesterenko, stated that Russia was concerned because of Bulgaria’s plans to accept elements of the US missile shield in Europe on its territory.

Several hours before the Russian Foreign Ministry got the Bulgarian reply, he declared that the signals about Bulgaria’s participation in the US missile defense were contradictory with Bulgarian PM Borisov saying talks were underway, and Foreign Minister Mladenov saying no formal negotiations were in place, and that the US Ambassador in Sofia was both confirming and disproving that information.
