Bulgaria's Prime Minister, Boyko Borisov, issued Thursday a stern warning to all local mayors to not abuse the recently released EU funds.
Borisov spoke during the General Assembly of the National Union of Municipalities, saying the State will refuse financing for projects that are in violation of the EU programs' rules.
“I would not allow for the funds to be frozen again by the European Commission. None of you, regardless of how small of big your municipality is, would be untouchable. Forget for ever about direct contracts. In such cases – Prosecutor and that's it. Those of you who dare to do illegal things should not come to me asking for money,” Borisov told the representatives of 176 municipalities from the total of 264 in Bulgaria.
The PM further recommended that mayors of municipalities where violations have been committed admit them before the electorate and the municipal councils.
The meeting is also attended by Finance Minister, Simeon Djankov, Environmental Minister, Nona Karadzhova, Social Minister, Totyu Mladenov, Economy Minister, Traicho Traikov and Agriculture Minister, Miroslav Naydenov.
They are discussing with local mayors the problems municipalities face in the absorption of the EU funds.
