Bulgaria PM Boyko Borisov has held a personal meeting in Sofia with Gazprom CEO, Alexei Miller, to discuss the South Stream natural gas pipeline project.
The press department of the Council of Ministers reported that reported that Bulgarian Energy Minister Traicho Traikov also attended the meeting.
Both the South Stream project and new contracts for the supply of Russian natural gas to Bulgaria that have to be signed were discussed.
PM Borisov raised the question of existing gas transit to Bulgaria and requested for it to be considered in the context of the South Stream project in a manner that does not adversely affect gas supplies to Bulgaria.
Bulgaria President Georgi Parvanov also met with Miller and they discussed the practical implementation of policy agreements. Parvanov pressed for the new gas supply contracts to be signed directly between Bulgaria and Russia rather than through intermediaries.
Miller confirmed that Russia would agree to sign direct contracts with Bulgaria and that the South Stream project would protect the interests of the Bulgarian side.
