Bulgarian private news agency BGNES has announced that one of its reporters had been abused verbally by the police in the Stara Zagora District Monday night.

“You are dead? Do you get that? You are already dead! Go away!”, Stara Zagora police spokesperson Yonka Georgieva is reported to have shouted at reporter Ivan Yanev who is said to have been the first to cover the news about the murder of a police officer in the village of Enina near the town of Kazanlak.

BGNES states that the abuse was generated by the fact that the reporter announced the news immediately.

“How do you dare announce something before even the police director has been notified about it?” the regional police spokesperson is said to have shouted at Ivan Yanev.

BGNES has complained that such attitude on part of the police towards its reporters is not a precedent and calls upon the Interior Ministry leadership to condemn it.

To make death threats againsta a journalist is unacceptable, but to publish the names of the suspect before he is convicted of the crime, and the victim before his relatives are notified is unacceptable as well.
