Stroke Delays Trial against Bulgaria Former Social Minister
Sofia City Court postponed the trial against former Minister of Social Policy and Labor, Emiliya Maslarova, and five other defendants after one of them was reported sick.
The notorious renovation of a social home in the southern city of Stara Zagora had robbed the State treasury of BGN 11 M.
The probe had shown that the Ministry of Labor and Social Services, under the leadership of former Labor Minister, and now Socialist Member of the Parliament, Emiliya Maslarova, had slated BGN 18,8 M for the renovations. Only BGN 7,8 M have been used for construction and repairs, while the remaining BNG 11 M were embezzled through fake invoices, the Bulgarian news agency BGNES reports Saturday.
The shady deal has been revealed through an investigation of the Supreme Prosecutor’s Office of Cassations.
At the beginning of the probe it was reported that Maslarova, and her friend Ventsislav Draganov, who has a construction firm, have pocketed BGN 9,8 M by violating the Public Procurement Act over the repair of the building in Stara Zagora. The amount was just updated to BGN 11 M.
Chief Prosecutor, Boris Velchev, asked for Maslarova to be stripped of her MP immunity, which the former Minister voluntarily gave away.
The Prosecutor’s Office accuses Maslarova of using the money for her own and for Draganov’s benefit.
The two are yet to be called to answer the investigators’ questions, but the pre-trial proceedings are said to be nearing their conclusion.
Maslarova and Draganov face being arrested if the Prosecutor manages to present sound proof for the embezzlement.
