The Sofia Court of Appeal has refused to release alleged crime boss Zlatomir Ivanov aka Zlatko Baretata from custody rescinding last week’s decision by Sofia City Court.

The reasons for the decision have not been revealed and Sofia City Prosecutor said no new evidence had been lodged.

After it became clear that Ivanov required surgery to the lower urethra over illness, Sofia City Court last week changed the detention status of Zlatomir Ivanov aka Zlatko Baretata from ‘custody’ to ‘house arrest’.

Bulgaria Prosecutors have charged Ivanov, along with 15 other men, with setting up an organized criminal group to distribute illegal drugs in December.

Ivanov was accused along with his fellow members: Evgeniy Evtimov, Georgi Yordanov, Martin Dimitrov, Valentin Lukov, Kosta Trifonov, Borislav Sekulov, Marin Valchev, Rosen Ivanov, Kiril Atanasov, Bogdan Vasilev, Martin Goreski, Vasil Kolev, Yuliyan Zashev, Daniel Krastev, Stoyan Dichev. The only member still missing is Anton Savov – Ivanov’s second in command.

Ivanov and Dimitrov were also charged in relation to the murder of Pernik drugs boss Rumen Stefanov in 2007.
