At the end of a spectacular performance at the European Parliament, interrupted frequently by applauses, Bulgaria's EC Designate Kristalina Georgieva made an emotional pledge to her mother.
“My mother celebrates her 89th birthday today. And I want to make one last pledge. My mother believed in Europe and she has always wanted me to learn French, which I didn't. If my nomination is confirmed, I will make the effort to learn French,” Kristalina Georgieva said, the last sentence pronounced in French.
The Bulgarian Commissioner Designate said the hearing has turned into a very rich discussion and promised to follow up on everything that has come up in it.
Bulgaria named World Bank official Kristalina Georgieva to replace Rumiana Jeleva, who withdrew her candidacy for the post of EU commissioner for humanitarian aid after politicians accused her of incompetence and dubious business practices.
