Ex PM Sergey Stanishev has no right to criticize the healthcare reform of the Borisov Cabinet, according to Health Minister Bozhidar Nanev.

Nanev stated this retorting to criticism by Stanishev earlier on Sunday when the Socialists declared they would dispute the healthcare reform measures such as closing of some hospitals in the Supreme Administrative Court.

“During the last four years, the BSP confidently led not only the healthcare sector but the entire Bulgarian state towards bankruptcy. The best proof is the current economic condition of the country. That’s why I fail to understand how Sergey Stanishev affords to criticize our attempts to save the healthcare sector,” Nanev declared

In his words, all 21 hospitals which will not be approved for contracts with the National Healthcare Fund were led to their crisis condition by the irresponsible actions of the previous government which left the healthcare without any clear rules.

“For the first time we dared to tell the truth, and to introduce clear criteria in order to distinguish between the functioning and non-functioning hospitals,” the Minister said slamming the Socialists for their “populist rhetoric and the stirring of civil unrest.”

“I think this is to the detriment of their party because the people are not dumb, and can see for themselves. It is high time the Socialists stopped with their speculations that in 2010 there are BGN 500 M fewer for the hospitals. Because the 2009 budget they are talking about remained only on paper. Thanks to their policies the state is in a deep financial crisis, which affects the healthcare as well,” Nanev said cited by dir.bg.

In his words, the Ministry has had to introduce “delegated budgets” for the hospitals around the country but is going to observe carefully the number of patients in each of them, and would make the necessary funding corrections every quarter.

On Sunday, Nanev carried out a surprise inspection of the hospital in the northeastern town of Dulovo which is slated for closure. He found that there were only five patients hospitalized in the entire institution with only one of them in need of a serious treatment.
