The number of Bulgarians who feel positive about the country’s entry into the Eurozone show a steady increase, according to a Eurobarometer survey published on Monday.

According to the detailed survey, which included comparisons with the previous poll in May 2009, there is a trend for more Bulgarians to be familiar with the issues and formal details of the process of adopting the Euro currency.

While fewer than half the Bulgarians polled had used Euro banknotes, 75% of respondents had seen the notes and coins.

They were among the better-informed European nations concerning knowledge of the technical application process via the Exchange Rate Mechanism (ERM), and were aware that European countries had a choice as to whether to join the Eurozone.

Almost a half (46%) were positive about the benefits to their country once the Euro had been adopted. The opposite view had dropped to 35% for the latest survey. Some 43% thought the Euro would lead to better public financing.

On a personal level, 48% considered they would be better off with the Euro currency, as opposed to 37% who felt they would be worse off.

A few favored entry as soon as possible, with some even stating it would happen in 2010. The majority preferred a slightly longer process, with full membership between 2010 and 2015.

Asked whether the changeover to the Euro in Bulgaria would be beneficial generally, 41% were positive, with 31% holding a negative view.
