Macedonia’s Foreign Ministry has offered Greece to hold a new bilateral meeting over the notorious name dispute.

Macedonia suggests that the meeting take place Thursday in London, in an attempt to bring new impetus into the negotiations with Greece.

A communiqué of the Macedonian Foreign Ministry says that the proposed bilateral meeting with Greece would take place simultaneously with an international conference on Afghanistan.

The name dispute between Macedonia and Greece dates back to 1991 when Macedonia became independent, which led to the country being admitted to the UN under the name Macedonia.

Greece holds that “Macedonia” is unacceptable name for its neighbor since a region in Northern Greece is also called “Macedonia. It vetoed Macedonia’s NATO accession in 2008, and could veto Macedonia’s EU accession talks.
