Bulgarian Prime Minister Boyko Borisov has called an “absolute lie” the rumors describing the husband of Bulgarian EU Commissioner-Designate Rumiana Jeleva as a “gangster”.

The German paper Die Welt recently published an article asking if Bulgaria’s Foreign Minister and EU Commissioner Designate Rumiana Jeleva was not really a “gangster’s bride for the EU”. The article cited anonymous rumors that Jeleva’s husband, banker Krasimir Jelev, had been involved with the Russian mafia along the Black Sea coast, and that he had worked for the murky business group TIM.

“Jeleva a gangster’s bride? An absolute lie, her husband has worked for a bank licensed by the Bulgarian National Bank and the European Central Bank,” Bulgaria’s Prime Minister Boyko Borisov said Wednesday after the weekly meeting of the cabinet answering questions by journalists.

Till the summer of 2009 Krasimir Jelev has been the head of the Central Cooperative Bank branch in Burgas.
