Tatiana Toncheva, former member of the Bulgarian Socialist Party (BSP) and runner-up to Boyko Borisov in the 2005 race for Sofia mayor, has suggested the possibility of forming a new political party.

In an interview on Bulgarian National Radio (BNR) broadcast on Tuesday, Doncheva stated her project might even be realized in 2010. She added that this would depend on gathering together a suitable team, and on appropriate conditions in the country.

If there was no good environment for the idea, it would, according to her, sink as "a laboratory exercise", merely conducted by someone "for the love of sport".

"The more significant thing is that there should be an alternative to the current government and it should be perceived by people as something sensible and its spokespeople should be people who are known by the community as serious and profound as people that do not speak in vain," said Doncheva.

She declined to speculate on the names of those who might join her venture, sayng only that it would be better to "leave it for the premiere".

She also said that she understood that there is a hunger for a new formation, because "strangers stop me in the street and ask me: "Come on, when?".

"I have many supporters, which means that there is something missing and they connect it with me," said the former MP.

When asked about possible involvement of people from the secret services in the project, Doncheva replied: "We have announced a project that was designed for the people, I do not think that it would discriminate against anyone." She pointed out that she "would not let the Secret Services turn us into puppets."

She said however that she stood by her opinion that people who were active with the services at the end of the totalitarian period and during the transition period were more literate, dealing with things more closely and more thoroughly than their colleagues who had worked only in the last 20 years.

Regarding the upcoming political year of 2010, Doncheva said she did not expect such complex combinations but rather combinations; preconditions, according to her, lay with the main leaders on the political scene, who determined the image of the current majority. She said that the government itself was experiencing some problems, but that the people have more limited criteria.

"I can state very responsibly that no prime minister of any country can spend two or three hours of the day for sports," added Doncheva. According to her, the problem was that all public issues were being resolved in an improvised way and that this was bound to come into the open at some point.

Doncheva cited two examples on the international scene in support of her argument. Regarding the choice for an EU Commissioner: "Neither Jose Manuel Barroso nor the key people of European policy are "elementarniks" that you can easily push from pillar to post," she stated, saying that "the same story applies to Russia - if you have something against an important project, you have to say it."

As for Bulgarian domestic politics, she suggested that it was not a decent thing, if in the morning, afternoon or evening, different things were said on the same issue, and gave an example with the teachers' salaries.

According to her, the same situation applies with the social demands, with the policy on income and with taxes. "We have many debts, I do not know why we fought for a small deficit, when most European countries have a big deficit," she concluded.
