Bulgaria’s Discussion Club for Social Local Policy (DKSMP) voiced strong concern about renovations made inside the Parliament building during the winter break.

The club, which is associated with the Bulgarian Socialist Party (BSP), held a press conference Sunday and alarmed about alleged renovations in the Parliament’s left wing where the offices of the Members of the Parliament from the ruling Citizens for European Development of Bulgaria (GERB) party are located.

Nikolay Belalov, Chair of DKSMP, believes the renovations are carried out secretly because only GERB is to benefit from them and this is why they insisted that MPs and their assistants are not allowed in the building during the break.

Belalov claims the left ywing’s hallways are filled with furniture and GERB MPs are remodeling their offices with money from the State Budget while offices of other parliamentary groups are locked.

The Club further accuses the GERB-led City Hall and former Mayor of Sofia and now Prime Minister, Boyko Borisov, and current Mayor, Yordanka Fandakova, of corruption involving the cleaning of the city. The say the cleaning companies consistently fail to remove the city’s waste, including during last week, and despite talks about them being fined, the sanctions are never imposed while the money for cleaning is ballooning in the City Hall’s budget year after year.

Belalov also asked why GERB, who are so determined to reveal and punish corruption practices of the previous cabinet, have overlooked the case where the City Hall, with the fake signature of then Mayor Borisov, sold public land in the “Strelbishte” district to the brother of the recently reinstated agent of the State National Security Agency (DANS), Ivan Drashkov, who later sold it to the GERB MP Emil Dimitrov. Dimitrov, on his part, used the land as collateral with a bank, Belalov claims, adding that currently a day care is built on the same land, while the ownership issue remains vague.

“We have a GERB Mayor on one end and a GERB MP on the other and a fake signature in the middle. The prosecution must certainly probe this case and provide answers,” Belalov says.

Other accusations include purposely delaying the investigation in the case where, during the previous cabinet, the contractor “Glavbolgarstroi” had done renovations with very inflated fees at the Ministry of Regional Development while the PM had secured very quickly a BGN 20 M price reduction with the same company for the construction of the new city sports center.
