Three border policemen – one Bulgarian and two Romanians – have been arrested in a joint operation at the north eastern Silistra checkpoint between Bulgaria and Romania.
The entire operation was coordinated by Roman Vassilev, the Sofia City Deputy Prosecutor, and involved Bulgarian internal security and Romanian investigators.
The arrests were made on December 19, according to the Interior Ministry press announcement on Monday.
It was established that, between September and December, the three guards, working together, had repeatedly demanded and taken bribes from citizens crossing the checkpoint between the two countries.
They were arrested while in the process of taking a bribe, and have been detained on suspicion of conducting criminal activities. The Bulgarian officer, who has not been named, had worked in various capacities at the Ministry of Interior for 20 years.
