Romania has declared its readiness to replace Bulgaria in the Russian-sponsored gas transit pipeline South Stream.
This has been made clear in an official position issued by the Romanian Economy Ministry, as cited by BNR.
The condition set by the Romanians for the Russian energy company Gazprom for having South Stream go through Romanian territory is full adherence to the local legislation with respect to the route of the pipeline.
The Romanian proposal is for the pipe to start at the Port of Constanta on the Black Sea and to split in two going to Serbia and Hungary.
The South Stream gas transit pipeline is a project of Russia’s Gazprom and Italy’s ENI, which were recently joined by France’s EDF. The existing international agreements provide for it to go from the Russian Black Sea coast near Novorossiysk to the Bulgarian Black Sea Port of Varna splitting in two pipes – to Southern Italy through Greece, and to Northern Italy and Austria through Serbia, Hungary, and Slovenia.
In addition to inviting the Russians to switch from Bulgaria to their territory with the South Stream pipeline, the Romanian government has also reiterated its commitment to the EU-sponsored gas transit pipeline Nabucco. Romania imports about 35% of its natural gas from Russia, with the rest coming from local deposits.
