Bulgaria might soon face the dilemma of accommodating 6 000 convicts in local jails.

The news was reported Saturday by the Bulgarian information agency BGNES, citing their own sources from the Bulgarian Bar Association.

The attorneys are taking part in a press conference in Sofia dedicated to the fifth anniversary of the Human Rights Court in Strasbourg.

The 6 000 are Bulgarians, who have been arrested for various crimes in different EU Member States, and are being held behind bars. The EU rules postulate the convicts must serve their sentences in their native countries, which is said to pose a huge burden on the Bulgarian prison system.

Mr. Parvanov can pardon them. He knows how to do this. 6000 extra pimps, whores, thieves, gunman or mutra's won't change that much in Sofia.

Philippe,

"The EU rules postulate the convicts must serve their sentences in their native countries, which is said to pose a huge burden on the Bulgarian prison system."

Your ironic remark that Parvanov could pardon 6000 gangsters wouldn't resolve the problem. If a criminal is sentenced in the EU or any other member country of the European Council he can serve his time in the country where he was sentenced or he can be send to his home country to serve his time there. Most countries prefer to do the latter, since it is less expensive and since they want to get rid of foreign criminals.

The problem here is that the European Human Rights charta demands that the prisons in the 'receiving' countries fulfill certain minimum standards. EU is spending even a lot of money to build detention centers in several new member or pre-accession countries. Bulgaria has so far no such prisons and can't therefore 'receive' all these criminals sentenced abroad.

This is Eurotrash socialists gone wild! Why don't you just incarcerate the criminal vermin in 5-star hotels? They are in prison to be punished, moron! Get serious about punishing criminals and maybe they will desist from criminal activity. As it is, criminals like going to prison for a rest cure. To relax, recreate, get food and medicine, so they can get out fit and strong and resume their criminal activities.
