Nearly one million Bulgarian women are victims of domestic violence, the charity foundation “Macedonia," reported Wednesday.
The foundation and its partners, such as other women foundations and crisis centers, held a meeting in Bulgaria's second largest city of Plovdiv as part of the international “16 Days without Domestic Violence” campaign.
Svetlana Iordanova, from the “Macedonia” foundation says that women are most often victims of their own husbands and have a hard time dealing with the problem by themselves, adding specialized help is a must.
Many of them, however, cannot overcome fear and shame and end up living their entire lives subjected to beatings and abuse, Iordanova points out, stressing that specialized help always proves successful.
The “Macedonia” foundation further estimates that the number is much higher than the officially registered 900 000 cases.
The campaign aims at educating about the laws and ways to seek help and support.
