Incumbent Basescu Faces Leftist Geoana in Romania Presidential Elections Runoff

Incumbent Traian Basescu of Democrat-Liberal Party is going to face the head of the Social Democrat Party, Mircea Geoana, in the runoff of Romania’s Presidential Elections.
Basescu won the first round of the elections Sunday with a slight lead, according to the exit polls of the sociological agencies INSOMAR and CURS. He is said to have received 33-34% of the cast votes vs. 31-32% for his closest opponent.
The two candidates will face each other in the Presidential Elections runoff on December 6, 2009.
The outcome of the Presidential Elections in Romania is very important for the country since the winner is going to name a Prime Minister to replace Emil Boc, whose 10-month-old government collapsed over cabinet disputes of budget cuts.
The establishment of a stable government is key for the execution of Romania’s EUR 20 B loan agreement with the International Monetary Fund.
The turnout in Sunday’s Romanian elections reached almost 50%.
