Bulgaria Socialist Party leader and former PM, Sergey Stanishev, has slammed the new center-right GERB government’s 2010 budget.
Stanishev, speaking at a press conference in Sofia Monday, stated that the 2010 budget will lead to rising unemployment, bankrupt municipalities and a high level of poverty.
He added that “On the contrary to the proclaimed policy of decentralization, the funds is the for municipalities have been reduced from 6,6% of GDP to 5,7% of GDP...Many municipalities have been condemned to struggle and some to go bankrupt. Municipalities must provide 5% co-funding of EU funds. This means the medium and small municipalities will fail to apply and implement their projects.”
“For agriculture, which directly or indirectly employs one quarter of the Bulgarian population, the budget funding is also significantly reduced.” Stanishev continued.
He concluded that the BGN 108 M provided by the budget for Ministry of Interior wages will not cover the expectations of the Bulgarian police.
Ex-Finance Minister and BSP MP, Plamen Oresharski, said that the government has based its budget on an ongoing economic downturn resulting from adverse external signals without considering the positive recent data from the US and other European economies.
