French Foreign Minister, Bernard Kouchner, has stated that although Afghanistan President Hamid Karzai is “corrupt” NATO must accept that “he is our guy”.

Karzai was named president for his second term on Monday after his main opponent Abdullah Abdullah, said he would not take part. The first round of election results were marred by massive fraud.

Nevertheless, Kouchner, speaking in an interview for the New York Times, said the allies had no choice but to work with Karzai in order to get the mission in Afghanistan back on track and start building a state capable of protecting its people and holding of the Taliban.

Kouchner also complained that President Barack Obama's US administration was drawing up a new strategy for the war in Afghanistan without consulting its European allies within NATO, leaving them in the dark.

"What is the goal? What is the road? And in the name of what?" Kouchner asked, according to the New York Times report. "Where are the Americans? It begins to be a problem ... We need to talk to each other as allies."

France has given Karzai a nine-point plan it feels will help him reform his government and has urged him to find a way to work with his bitter defeated election rival, former foreign minister Abdullah Abdullah.

What is the most important conclusion from the Sofia Mayor elections on November 15, 2009?

· That the Sofia residents are either completely disillusioned with politics, or care little about who is Mayor. - 47

· That the ruling party GERB of PM Borisov continues to be hugely popular, whereas the Socialists are pretty much out. - 44

· That the record-high jackpot of the Bulgarian State Lottery "Toto" generated much greater interest than the Mayor elections. - 24

· That the decline of the Socialist Party has stopped whereas the ruling party GERB has failed to attract the expected very high number of voters. - 7
