The workforce of the National Customs Agency to be reduced by 104 people, in order to harmonize with EU requirements.

The cut in employment is in accordance with the institution’s structural regulations, the government information service announced on Wednesday.

The decision was taken following a detailed analysis of the activities of Bulgaria’s customs departments in relation to EU membership conditions.

The aim is to improve administrative capacity and work-efficiency, thereby ensuring better salaries for customs officers.

At the moment, the total number of employees is 4 003. Following the proposed cuts, 3 899 staff will continue to work in customs administration.

The pay-roll sector of the Central Customs Directorate will be augmented by 49 staff. In total, 567 experts will continue working at the directorate, as opposed to the 616 currently employed.

On Tuesday the agency has announced that newly recruited employees who scored less than 4/6 points in the basic training course would not be certified as operational customs personnel. The average score in this test is, however, 4,66/6.

May I make an advice to save on salaries for border police?

Upon arrival on Sofia airport, at the passport control, there is the famous RED LINE. The line where the passengers have to wait before presenting their selves at the borderpolice. That red line is put 10 meters before the desks. (when they do something in BG, they do it deep! Europe's best pupils!). There are always 2-3-4 officers controlling that NO passenger dares to step over this red line before the desk is free. "Welcome to Bulgaria". What a waste! 3 officers, on a weekly basis gives 20 persons, doing the most ridiculous job you can imagine: stop people that cross the red line untill the desk is free!. The minister who is responsible for this is in fact criminal: to put young ambitious people at the start of their career in such an idiot job, is insane. I hope he does better with his own children. 20 persons, 600 BGN, 144.000 BGN per year; 4 airports, 20 road border crossings, .... MILLIONS!

What is the most important conclusion from the Sofia Mayor elections on November 15, 2009?
That the ruling party GERB of PM Borisov continues to be hugely popular, whereas the Socialists are pretty much out.

That the decline of the Socialist Party has stopped whereas the ruling party GERB has failed to attract the expected very high number of voters.

That the Sofia residents are either completely disillusioned with politics, or care little about who is Mayor.

That the record-high jackpot of the Bulgarian State Lottery "Toto" generated much greater interest than the Mayor elections.
