Bulgaria Socialists Slam Stanishev Parliament Immunity Vote
Domestic | November 4, 2009, Wednesday
The first item on the Bulgaria parliament weekly agenda will be for a vote on the Chief Prosecutor’s request for BSP leader Sergey Stanishev to give up his legal immunity.
This proposal was put forward by the governing center-right GERB party on Wednesday after Bulgaria’s Chief Prosecutor, Boris Velchev, tabled to Parliament a request for the stripping of the MP’s legal immunity of former PM Sergey Stanishev.
Former Interior Minister and Bulgarian Socialist Party (BSP) MP, Mihail Mikov, stated that the vote was absolutely pointless after Stanishev voluntarily gave up his immunity and stated that it was just a political flexing of muscles by the governing GERB party.
Parliament Chair, Tsetska Tsacheva, however said that the vote simply followed the practice of the previous parliament.
