The Chief Sofia City Prosecutor, Nikolay Kokinov, stated Wednesday that it is too early to tell whether former Bulgaria PM Sergey Stanishev will end up in jail.
Kokinov said that along with Chief Prosecutor Boris Velchev, they had prepared a request to parliament for Bulgarian Socialist Party leader Stanishev to give up his MPs legal immunity on Tuesday. He added that this will now not be followed through after Stanishev gave his immunity up voluntarily, BNT reported.
He explained that the Prosecutor’s Office will work on two cases against Stanishev – one regarding the disappearance of 8 National State Security Agency (DANS) documents which entered the Council of Ministers, but were never returned to the DANS. If found guilty this crime of recklessness has a 2 year jail sentence attached Kokinov confirmed.
Kokinov added that the second investigation would be regarding Stanishev’s alleged mishandling of a DANS report that was recently leaked into the public domain. He stated that the investigation regarding the leak was still in full swing and involved questioning a large number of people
He concluded that the prosecutor’s office is currently working on up to 30 cases against former Minister’s in the Stanishev cabinet and former State Agency heads, all of which will be completed by the New Year
Has opened for us the green light to launch an investigation of MP Sergey Stanishev said Sofia city prosecutor Nikolai Kokinov to BNT.
