Bulgaria Finds Itself Engulfed by Swine Flu Epidemic

Bulgaria is in the middle of a flu epidemic, and this is caused by the A (H1N1) virus, Dr. Angel Kunchev, head of the Department of Control of Communicable Diseases in the Ministry of Health confirmed.
Dr. Kunchev's statement came as Shumen and Yambol followed Burgas Monday in announcing a swine flu epidemic, shutting all schools and banning public gatherings.
On Monday , the Regional Inspectorate for Protection and Control of Public Health announced an influenza epidemic in the Eastern Bulgarian city of Shumen. This was announced by Shumen’s chief epidemiologist, Dr. Marko Markov. He added that currently the incidence of seasonal flu in Shumen is 240 per 10 000 people.
An Influenza epidemic was also officially declared throughout the Yambol District in South-East Bulgaria. Elsewhere, all the schools in the Vratsa District have been sent on ‘swine flu’ vacation.
Earlier on Monday the District of Burgas in Southeast Bulgaria declared a swine flu epidemic over the rising number of people infected with the A(H1N1) virus.
The medical alert will be in force until November 6 but may be extended. All schools will be closed until that date, and all public events have been canceled.
