The Bulgarian Socialist Party (BSP) demanded Wednesday the resignation of the Minister of Energy, Economy and Tourism, Traicho Traikov, the party press center announced.
The declaration came in the heels of the announcement of the German utility RWE that it had abandoned plans to participate in the construction of a 2000MW Nuclear Power Plant (NPP) in the Bulgarian Danube town of Belene due to funding problems,
BSP declared they wanted Traikov ousted over his inability to realize and lead a national policy in the energy sector.
“With their ambiguous energy policy, the Bulgarian cabinet sabotages strategic national interests. The diverse and negative signals about the ineffectiveness of the Belene NPP led to the withdrawal of the National Electric Company partner in the project – RWE,” the declaration reads.
BSP further state their leadership adamantly opposes the actions of the cabinet in the energy sector, defining them as “chaotic and hasty.”
The delay or the failure of the Belene project will trigger losses for Bulgaria of billions of EUR, will hurt national interests at the time of economic crisis, and will discourage future potential investors, according to the Socialists.
“The RWE withdrawal is a very hard blow on the Bulgarian economy and enery,” BSP concludes.
