Bulgaria's Justice Minister, Margarita Popova, has sent to the Prosecutors Office evidence of unprofitable contracts for BGN millions, signed by her predecessor, Meglena Tacheva.
The contracts for public tenders involve numerous violations, Popova said Wednesday, adding that just the construction of a new building for the Sofia District Court and District Prosecutor's Office, could force the State to declare bankruptcy.
In addition to submitting those contracts to the Prosecutor, Popova announced she will begin legal proceedings to annul them while three employees from the Justice Ministry have already been fired over their involvement in the alleged violations.
The financial audit revealed the Justice Ministry had signed contracts for BGN 350 M while its capital expenditures budget for the next three years is BGN 26 M per year, leading the institution to face a BGN 333 M budget hole.
One of the reasons for the costly construction and renovation works is the fact that Court Chairs have been left to decide themselves which project to chose, while many contracts include steep penalties for delayed payments in the amount of up to BGN 155 000 per day.
In the beginning of September, former Agriculture Minister, Valeri Tsvetanov, became the first member of the three-party coalition cabinet to face legal charges.
