Former PM and leader of the Bulgarian rightist DSB party, Ivan Kostov, has called for a ban on all forms of gambling in Bulgaria.

Kostov, leader of the right-wing Democrats for a Strong Bulgaria (DSB), stated that the current taxes on gambling companies fail to contribute significant amounts to the state budget. He added that the damage gambling cause to Bulgarian society is huge.

"People who lobbied to keep gambling free of excise duties lied that this would bring higher revenue to the Budget and that the state would get money in return. I support the idea of a complete ban on gambling in Bulgaria, because it doesn't bring revenue, causes damage and probably the only people who benefit from it are the gambling bosses," Kostov said.

Last Thursday, the Bulgarian government approved a plan to introduce identical tax rates for all games of chance. Thus, the state lottery and private fixed-odds sports betting bookmaker Eurofootball will pay 12 per cent instead of 10 per cent of their betting turnover.

Eurofootball reacted by stating that the changes will mean the industry in Bulgaria will lose BGN 30 M in 2010 and that many companies will face bankruptcy.

Well, well, Mr. Kostov will gain my respect. Every modern nation (except the US and SA) canalizes the natural gambling needs of their citizens through state controlled lotteries and limited casinos. Private initiative is very often a money laundry machine. Criminal money becomes official, because "somebody gambled and lost 100.000 EUR yesterday evening". 10% profit tax, and the drugs money is official. They are everywhere in BG. Sure that 90% of the owners have blood on their hands. All EU countries banned these "free" casinos. Turkey did it 7 years ago (the bosses came to buy the BG hotels, just to install their casinos), Russia did it last July. I hope Bulgaria makes this step soon!

Nellie.

"Most of these are in second rate third world countries full of dumb and ignorant people."

Really? Would you include Japan, Germany, Australia, England, Canada, Denmark, the Netherlands, Switzerland, New Zealand, and Finland as "second rate third world countries full of dumb and ignorant people"?

And your view of the central and south American countries seems to be that they're all huts scattered in the jungles, with nothing resembling cities with industry, and people with skills capable of producing all kinds of things. Having a developed culure of their own? And, incidentally, they're not cyberspace non-entities, either.

One of the reasons the Church is so popular in the South American countries is that the native population recognizes the relationship between the Church and their ancestors. This is something you're too set in your ways to consider.#

Face it, lamb chop, this round you've lost big time.

How many live converts or temple worthy members are there in these civilized countries? Half a dozen?

They recognize my arse. The Mormon missionaries lie to them that Jesus went to South America and all the rest of the Mormon cool-aide, and these ignorant dumb peasants believe it. But they almost never attend church, tithe, or become temple-worthy. Keep converting the dead, because that's the ONLY way the church will get any new converts. lol

Shouldn't you be out there converting the dead and doing all sorts of important temple work, like canning vegetables? Why aren't you doing your temple work instead of hanging out on this Bulgarian forum irritating the Bulgarians?

If you knew what you're talking about, you'd know the answers to the questions you ask, but you're too ignorant to know how to ask a pertinent question.

Why am I here tonight? Because there's a funnier comedian on the forum than on the TV. Hilarious!

How did this thread get off-topic so fast?!?!?!

Back to gambling. According to Kostov, gambling is OK if the state gets the profits, like a lottery. Not OK when the casino gets the profits. Something about this statement does not compute. It stinks of communism, if you ask me.
