The 47th Congress of the Bulgarian Socialist Party has voted to include a new issue on its agenda: the election of a Chair of the National Council of the party.

This has happened after a motion by the current Chair, Bulgaria’s former Prime Minister, Sergey Stanishev.

410 delegates voted in favor, 235 against, and 64 abstained. A total of 894 delegates are registered for Sunday’s Party Congress of theocialists. However, some have decided not tot vote at all on Stanishev’s proposal

Originally, the agenda of the Congress did not include anything anything about the election of a new leader but party spokespersons had made it clear that this could be added to the agenda by the delegates to the Congress themselves.

Stanishev’s motion was approved even though a number of the BSP activists, including some MPs, raised the objection that there was no way to hold elections when there was a leader in place. Some have said Stanishev must resign in order to hold elections.

Others opposed on the grounds that by including the election of a new leader in the last moment, potential bidders did not have the time to prepare their platforms.

Stanishev had declared his intention to ask the Congress for a confidence vote.
