Firefighters from the Bulgarian Black Sea capital Varna were able to rescue 16 children and 2 teachers from the burning Armenian school in the city.

The information was reported for Darik radio by the Varna firefighters’ Chief, Tihomir Totev.

The fire broke Saturday afternoon on the first level of the building while children were holding classes inside. Two teams of firefighters arrived at the location and were able to evacuate everyone and extinguish the fire.

The school is next door to the Armenian Church in Varna. The priest suffered a heart condition and was taken to the hospital, but he is reported to be in stable condition.

The fire most likely was caused by an electric appliance that was left on, Totev says.
