The mosque in Bulgaria’s Danube town of Nikopol has burned down after it caught fire early on Wednesday.

It is still unclear how the fire started but the local authorities have ruled out arson. The fire fighters who arrived on the spot did not manage to save the old mosque building which was built at the beginning of the 20th century.

On Monday, October 5, the mosque in the southern city of Blagoevgrad also caught fire, and part of its roof was destroyed as a result. The most likely cause of the fire is a short circuit in the electric system of the building.

The Chief Mufti’s Office has stressed that the two temples are historic and cultural monuments. Its data shows that in the last few years there were 110 cases of vandalism against Muslim temples in Bulgaria, and called upon the Interior Ministry to guarantee the security of all Bulgarian citizens.
