George Papandreou (R) is sworn in as Greece's new Prime Minister, after his PASOK party swept the polls in Sunday's general elections, in Athens, on 6 October 2009.
George Papandreou was sworn in Tuesday as the new Prime Minister of Greece after his party PASOK won Sunday’s Parliamentary Elections.
The Panhellenic Socialist Movement (PASOK) has 160 out of 300 MP seats. According to the Greek press, the new government which will replace that of the outgoing head of the conservative New Democracy party, Costas Karamanlis, is going to have fewer ministries (14 down from 16), fewer deputy ministers (10 fewer), and more women.
“I believe that as the Prime Minister of Greece you will achieve your goals to get the country out of the economic crisis, and to provide for the well-being of the friendly Greek nation,” Bulgaria’s Prime Minister Boyko Borisov stated in his letter congratulating his new Greek counterpart George Papandreou.
