Bulgaria: Ireland Journalist O'Brien: Fear Did Play Role in Lisbon Treaty 'Yes' The improved campaign of the "Yes" camp is one of the two key reasons for the ratification of the Lisbon Treaty in Ireland, according to journalist Paul O'Brien. Photo by EPA/BGNES

Fear did play a role in reversing the rejection of EU’s Lisbon Treaty in the second Ireland referendum, The Irish Examiner journalist Paul O’Brien told Novinite.com in an exclusive interview.

“I think the suggestion that fear played a part in the “Yes” vote is accurate. Irish people right now are fearful for their jobs, their homes, their children, their futures. So when voters were told that Ireland could be left behind in Europe if it voted no, I think that weighed heavily on people's minds,” said O’Brien who is Political Correspondent of The Irish Examiner, when asked about the statement of Libertas party leader, Declan Ganley.

According to O’Brien, the two major factors that swayed the vote in favor of ratifying the Lisbon Treaty compared to the first Irish referendum in June 2008, were the improved campaign of the “Yes” camp, and the fact that the political campaigning was focused on the economy.
