The prominent film director, Roman Polanski, has been detained on a 31-year-old US arrest warrant, BBC reports Sunday, citing Swiss police officials.

Polanski, 76, was taken into custody Saturday as he travelled from France to Zurich to receive a lifetime achievement award at the Zurich Film Festival.

In 1978 Polanski fled the US after pleading guilty to rape charges. His was indicted on six counts for having sex with a 13-year-old girl in 1977 and was facing live behind bars.

Polanski never returned to the US and even his 2002 Oscar for directing The Pianist was collected by Harrison Ford.

Polanski now claims the judge then arranged a plea agreement, but later broke his promise. The judge is already deceased and Polanski's lawyers recently requested the case dismissed. In May, the request was rejected by US Judge, Peter Espinoza, who agreed there was misconduct by the original judge, but ordered the film director to return to the US to personally apply for dismissal.

Polanski's lawyers said he would not return to the US over fears he would be immediately arrested as a fugitive.

The Swiss Justice Ministry said the Polish-born movie director, who is also a French citizen, was held in jail, awaiting possible extradition to the US.

France's Culture Minister, Frederic Mitterand, is quoted as saying he "strongly regrets that a new ordeal is being inflicted on someone who has already experienced so many of them and French President Nicolas Sarkozy was following the case with great attention and shares the minister's hope that the situation can be quickly resolved."

The Zurich Film Festival organizers declared they were in "shock and dismay" over the arrest but would go ahead with plans to show a retrospective of Polanski's work. They also plan a special event as a sign of solidarity with the film director.

Samantha Geimer, the then 13-year-old girl involved in the 1977 rape charges, has asked the US court to drop them over the continued publication of details causing harm to her family.

Don't be any more ignorant than you have to be. I didn't say the situation was hilarious, but the irony is. His arrest being triggered by his own lawyers?

" Check this article in today's LA Times. It's so ironic it's hilarious."

I didn't find it ironic or hilarious. This guy is your age, for God's sake! He has been spending a lot of time in Switzerland, he has a house there, and NOW they arrest him? The Swiss are truly idiotic.

"And I am sick of dumb imbeciles calling Mormonism a religion when it is nothing but a CULT!!!!"

You have your opinion, and I've heard it x+ times. There are several million people who disagree with you. The LDS a recognized and legally constituted church. But even if it were a cult, it wouldn't be your place to conduct a smear campaign against it.

It could be voodoo, for all I care, but a person is entitled to his/her belief, no matter what it is, without suffering the deprecation you've been spouting for so long. Especially the accusation of being duped or imbeciles. You're way out of line there. I know several who outshine you in both intelligence and manners.

I dasagre with many religious beliefs, but I would never spend so much time--in fact, not even a minute--heaping ridicule upon its adherents.

Bill,

what are you expecting from someone from the Klan? The problem with such people is that they are paranoid in the highest degree, and on a certain day they really drop out and become dangerous.

" The position that laws are made to be broken is only taken by outlaws!"

Oh, really? What about lawyers? Or should I say liars? How did OJ not get convicted after killing two people in cold blood if the laws are cast in concrete? They are not, they are elastic, and anyone can stretch them and manipulate them, and you well know it!

" The sentence of a racist."

You say "racist" like it is a bad thing. I am a racist, do you have a problem with that? I am sick and tired of politically correct minorities slamming racism. I am a great fan and supporter of KKK Grand Wizard David Duke. He is THE MAN!

I see you're still intent upon insulting both me and my Church. That has no bearing whatever on the case in question.

" Officials who "look the other way" are not doing their job."

I see you are one of those morons who will follow each and every idiotic rule and law no matter how ridiculous or stupid. No. Laws are there to be broken, bent, and stretched. Everything is subject to interpretation and all laws are elastic and flexible. These Swiss imbeciles were doing their job mindlessly without a rational thought in their heads, just like the Germans during WWII. Germanic races are very good at pray, pay and obey. It is surprising why Mormonism hasn't done better in Germany, Austria and Switzerland.

"Nonsense. They could have just turned a blind eye and left well enough alone."

Please stay within your realm of knowledge! So long as the warrant is in effect, law enforcement personnel are required to honor it. Officials who "look the other way" are not doing their job.

As to the accounts in their banks, the Swiss have been for years held to strict secrecy laws. They neither simply hand out information, nor do they get involved in the business of their account holders.

They have, however, just recently, agreed to open account information to authorities seeking tax evaders.

" If nobody wants to prosecute, they should have rescinded the arrest warrant. Since it was still in effect, the Swiss really didn't have any other choice."

Nonsense. They could have just turned a blind eye and left well enough alone. The girl got an undisclosed amount of money to keep quiet and she is not complaining. If you have no victim, you have no crime. The Swiss are a bunch or busy bodies. They should mind their own business.

And please don't tell me the Swiss are trying to be fair and do the right thing after concealing the bank accounts of all the crooks and tax evaders in the world for years. I'd like to see the Swiss apprehend and extradite the bank accounts of Bulgarian ex-communist pigs, like Todor Zivkov and his buddies, Ahmed Dougan, etc.
