The mayor and chief architect of the town of Veliko Tarnovo, Central Northern Bulgaria, have been charged with malfeasance in office.

Prosecutors say Rumen Rashev and Elena Abadzhieva have overstepped their powers by offering a municipality-owned land plot to a private construction company, which profited a total of BGN 3,5 M from the deal.

The two officials, who have not been detained, face from one to eight years in prison if found guilty.
