Gertrude Baines, the world's oldest person, died at 7:25 am at Western Convalescent Hospital Friday, in Los Angeles, California.

The African-American woman was born on April 6, 1894, in Shellman, Georgia, during the second term of US President Grover Cleveland. Her father is believed to have been a slave, the LA Times reported.

Baines has outlived all of her relatives. She married young and then divorced. She only had one daughter who died of typhoid at 18.

Baines became the oldest person in the world after a Portuguese woman, Maria de Jesus, died in January 2009, also at the age of 115.

Now the world's oldest person title passes to a 114-year-old Japanese woman, Kama Chinen.
