Croatian Ruling Party Triumphs in Elections, Tough Negotiations Ahead
In a widely expected outcome, Croatia's ruling conservative party, the Croatian Democratic Union (HDZ), emerged victorious in the parliamentary elections
City Councilor Georgi Kadiev, popular known as the "red yuppie", is going to be the nominee of the Bulgarian Socialist Party for the November Sofia Mayor elections.
This has become clear since Kadiev is the only one of the 13 nominees who submitted the required documentation at the Sofia organization of the BSP before the deadline - September 5.
Each of the nominees, who included Member of the European Parliament Iliana Iotova, Members of Parliament Petar Korumbashev, Yanaki Stoilov (leader of the so called left wing at the BSP), and Meglena Plugchieva (former Deputy Prime Minister in charge of EU funding), were supposed to submit a CV and a cover letter on the following topic: "Why do I want to become Mayor of the Sofia Municipality, what are its problems, and how do I plan to solve them?"
The Sofia organization of the BSP intended to have internal elections but since only one of the nominees has med the criteria this intention will not be materialized.
Kadiev's nomination will be confirmed at a meeting of BSP-Sofia next Monday, September 14.
Kadiev has an international relations degree from the Moscow State Institute of International Relations, a Master's in diplomacy from Lester University, UK, and a Master's in public administration from the Kennedy School of Government, Harvard University. In 2005-2007, he was Bulgaria's Deputy Minister of Finance.
The Bulgarian capital Sofia has to hold partial local elections because the leader of the GERB party, Boyko Borisov, who has been the Mayor since 2005 (reelected in 2007), became the Prime Minister of Bulgaria in July 2009.
The Bulgarian Socialist Party has traditionally failed to perform well in Sofia where the majority of residents vote rightist.
