At least three deals made by the Ministry of Defense have been sent to be investigated by the Prosecutor's office, Bulgaria PM Boyko Borisov stated Friday.
Borisov was informed of the details of the cases by Defense Minister, Nikolay Mladenov, whose Ministry has completed a full investigation into deals made by the previous three-way coalition government.
"The prosecutors are going to have plenty of work at the Ministry of Defense alone," Borisov said as he showed to the media two absurd-looking pink BMWs purchased by the team of the former Minister, Nikolay Tsonev, for the Ministry's needs. The two cars are listed with the Ministry register as "gray" and "black", whereas they are some sort of a rose pink color.
"I am outraged because the army is the foundation of the state. The military officers have been turned into clowns by several ministers," the Prime Minister declared.
According to Mladenov the country had lost over BGN 100 M from the deals and orders made by the previous Defense team led by Nikolay Tsonev. Borisov criticized the "hugely expensive" renovation of the Ministry building.
The announcement came after it was announced earlier Friday that the Military Prosecutor's office in Sofia has completed pre-trial proceedings against the Director of Bulgaria's Military Police, Brigadier General Ivan Mechkov, over the misuse of power.
