Romania's President, Traian Basescu, has congratulated the citizens of Moldova for the 18th year since the country's independence from the Soviet Union with a special statement.

The Republic of Moldova is at a crossroads in its history after its voters decided that they want a modern and democratic country answering the requirements of the European integration, Basescu's statement reads.

Moldova's new Parliament is going to be convened for the first time tomorrow; it will be dominated by a coalition of four parties called "Alliance for European Integration", which hold 53 of the total of 101 MP seats.

The new alliance is expected to create a governing coalition and to present a joint nomination for the presidency that was occupied by communist Vladimir Voronin.
