Afghan President Hamid Karzai's campaign chief says he has won enough votes to secure a majority without the need for a second round run-off.

Deen Mohammad said that initial results showed that the president has got a majority, and there would not be a second round, the BBC reported.

Final election results are expected no sooner than September 3.

Earlier reports said the two main rivals, Hamid Karzai and Abdullah Abdullah, reportedly had nearly equal results.

Karzai wins the majority of the votes in the Southern and Eastern provinces, while Abdullah leads the elections North of Kabul.

There are still not reports on the western region, including the large Herat province, where the elections results may affects seriously the final vote count.

Hamid Karzai, Afghanistan's incumbent president, was running for re-election after seven years in office against 40 other candidates, CNN reminded.

Afghan election officials said 26 people were killed in sporadic violence around the country during the voting

Millions of Afghans defied threats from the Taliban to turn out and vote in Thursday's presidential election.

Although there were some attacks by insurgents, the UN said the vast majority of polling stations were able to function.
