The Bulgarian Interior Ministry and the Finance Ministry have conducted an investigation of 16 companies for fuels smugglers.

This has been announced Thursday by the Interior Minister, Tsvetan Tsvetanov, adding that more details on the case will be released soon.

The joint operation of the Customs officials, the State Revenue Agency, and the Interior Ministry has resulted in revealing a huge scheme for value added tax (VAT) draining, Tsvetanov said.

Only one of the companies which deal with fuel trade and delivery has incurred losses to the state budget for about BGN 15 M. Tsetanov refused to announce the name of this firm.

However, he explained that the company drained VAT for BGN 12 M, and each month after that it misappropriated BGN 400 000.
