Bulgaria's President, Georgi Parvanov, warned Sunday that the Russian-sponsored South Stream gas transit pipeline might circumvent Bulgaria.
"We should not rule out the possibility that if we are hesitant, this project might just go around us - through Turkey and Greece and then - to Italy. In this way, Bulgaria will be left out", Parvanov said in the southern city of Plovdiv.
He referred to the recent agreement between Russia and Turkey that was signed by Putin and Erdogan on Thursday, and provided for the passing of South Stream through Turkish territorial waters.
The President also said that Bulgaria needed to prepare for new problems with natural gas supplies, and that the EU institutions in Brussels had also warned about this possibility.
"I have no doubts that the project for the Belene Nuclear Power Plant needs to be speeded up. I will remind an idea of mine: that neighboring countries like Serbia and Macedonia, for instance, should also be involved in it. Their Presidents have also agreed", Parvanov declared regarding the unclear fate of the Belene NPP project.
Parvanov has declined to comment on the recent changes of top-ranking administrative officials made by the new government of Prime Minister Boyko Borisov.
