Bulgaria Migrant Death: Guilty Until Proven Innocent?
We know so little about the death of an Afghan migrant in Bulgaria we cannot afford taking "sides".
Bozhidar Dimitrov Stoyanov was born December 3, 1945 in the Black Sea town of Sozopol in a family of Bulgarian refugees from Eastern Thrace (now part of Turkey).
Dimitrov is a well-known Bulgarian historian working in the sphere of Medieval Bulgarian history, the Ottoman rule in Bulgaria, and the Macedonian Question. He is a former director of the National History Museum, and is known for his nationalist views.
Dimitrov was formerly a member of the Supreme Council of the Bulgarian Socialist Party before leaving and switching to the center-right GERB party of Borisov months before the 2009 elections.
In June 2009, it became clear that Dimitrov collaborated with the so called State Security, the intelligence and secret police during the communist regime. He is known to have penetrated the secret archives of the Vatican where he was granted access in his capacity as a scholar.
As the director of the National Historical Museum, he had a conflict with then-President Petar Stoyanov regarding whether to return the Istoriya Slavyanobolgarskaya (a book of great importance to all Bulgarians due to its role for the self-awareness of the Bulgarian nation) rough copy to the Zograf Monastery in Athos, Greece, or leave it in Bulgaria.
Being a member of the Supreme Party Council of Bulgarian Socialist Party, he declared himself openly against the party in 2005 by not supporting BSP Mayor of Sofia candidate, Tatyana Doncheva, and instead favoring the independent Boyko Borisov. Because of this he was taken down from the post of BSP municipal councilors leader in Sofia.
Dimitrov is the author of 30 treatises and over 250 articles and papers in the sphere of his research, as well as several books (including "The Ten Lies of Macedonism" and "Twelve Myths in Bulgarian History"). He has specialized in paleography in Paris and also hosts the patriotic history-related Pamet Balgarska (Bulgarian Memory) show on the national television Channel 1.
In Bulgaria's Parliamentary Elections on July 5, he was elected Member of Parliament as a majority candidate for the GERB in the Eastern electoral district of Burgas.
