The European Union will unblock EUR 171 M of SAPARD funds for Romania, officials reported.

This was announced by the Romanian Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Rural Development, the Bulgarian information agency, BTA, reported.

Romania will receive a letter from the European Commission for the unblocking of the funds. The state budget will not be obliged any more to pay for the projects.

The SAPARD funds for Romania were blocked in the summer of 2008, after an EC mission found out about weaknesses in the management and control systems working with the direct payments for the projects.

In September 2008, the Romanian government resumed the payment, awaiting the EC decission, whether the funds will be unblocked at all.
