The Republic of Ireland is holding a second referendum on the EU Reform Treaty, known as the Lisbon Treaty, on October 2, 2009.

This was announced Wednesday by the Irish Prime Minister, Brian Cowen, This became possible after the EU Council Summit in Brussels in June, when the EU leaders agreed on a series of opt-outs for Ireand stating that the treaty will not change Ireland's taxation, abortion laws or military neutrality.

"I believe these concerns have been addressed now in the shape of the legal guarantees. On that basis, I recommended to the government that we return to the people to seek their approval for Ireland to ratify the treaty and that referendum will take place on 2 October", Cowen told the Irish Parliament.

Most EU member states have ratified the treaty, but the Presidents of the Czech Republic, Vaclav Klaus, and Poland, Lech Kaczynski, have not yet signed it, saying they will wait for the decision of Irish voters.
