The supreme leader of Iran, Ayatollah Khamenei, has declared that the Iranian people had elected President the person they wanted (i.e. incumbent Ahmadinejad).
Khamenei cited the reelection of Ahmadinejad, and especially the high voter turnout at the June 12 Presidential Elections, which reached 85%, as proof for the unyielding popular support for the regime of the Islamic Republic.
"The Islamic republic will never manipulate votes and commit treason. The legal structure in this country does not allow vote-rigging," Khamenei said during Friday prayers as quoted by The Guardian.
The Ayatollah also called upon the people still organizing protest rallies in support of the defeated moderate candidate Moussavi to quit, or else they would have to be held responsible for the potential consequence of the chaos they might cause, BGNES reported.
In what was his first address to the people after the start of the pro-Moussavi rallies, Iran's supreme leader declared the Iranian nation needed peace, and that the enemies of Iran used the disputing of the election results to target the foundations of the Islamic Republic regime.
"This is not a competition between outside and inside the establishment as Zionists, media in the UK, in the US, have been trying to say," Khamenei said confirming the unity of the regime in what he decribed as message for "leaders of world arrogance, the western countries".
