US President Barack Obama has told the new Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu that his Administration supported the idea of an independent Palestinian state.
During Netanyahu's visit to the White House on Monday, the difference between his cabinet and the Obama Administration surfaced as Israel wants greater security guarantees and clearer partnership.
"I want to make it clear that we don't want to govern the Palestinians... If Israel's security conditions are met and there's recognition of Israel's legitimacy - its permanent legitimacy - then I think we can envision an arrangement where Palestinians and Israelis live side by side in dignity, security and in peace," Netanyahu said as quoted by CNN.
Even though Obama has urged a freeze of Israel settlement activity in the Palestinian territories, he has also reaffirmed US military and financial support for Israel.
President Obama and Prime Minister Netanyahu agreed that the issue of Iran's nuclear program had become an urgent one to deal with. The governments of both USA and Israel are concerned that Iran could be seeking nuclear weapons disguised as a civilian nuclear program.
Yet, while Netanyahu wanted to a deadline on negotiations over Iran's nuclear program, Obama has refused to fix a time frame. At the same time, the US President has made it clear he would not allow continuing negotiations to drag on forever and be used as a cover for any weapons-related nuclear activity.
