Bulgaria is the only EU member from Eastern Europe which is absent from a video of the European Commission entitled "1989-2009: 20 Years of Liberty".
Bulgaria's absence from the EC video dedicated to the anniversary since the end of communism in Europe has been pointed in an article of kafene.net, the London-based website of Bulgarian journalists from the former BBC World Service Bulgarian.
The EC video starts with footage of the crushing of the 1956 Hungarian rebellion by Soviet troops, and the intervention of the Warsaw Pact forces in Czechoslovakia in 1968.
It also shows the declaration of martial law in Poland in 1981, and demonstrations in Gdansk and Warsaw.
1989 is presented with footage from Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia, and Romania, and November 9, 1989, is emphasized with footage of the fall of the Berlin Wall, which are integrated with images of mother giving birth to a child apparently standing for the birth of Free Europe.
After that, the three-minute clip continues with images of the last Soviet troops leaving Hungary in 1991, and of Lithuania's independence, as well as with the removal of border control in the EU in 1995.
The video ends by showing the celebrations of the accession of ten new member states to the EU including eight from Eastern Europe, and declaring "Europe Reunited - May 2004".
The latest EU enlargement with Bulgaria and Romania on January 1, 2007, is not mentioned in the video. Thus, the whole clip makes no mention whatsoever of Bulgaria.
Kafene.net points out that Poland has already expressed its dissatisfaction with the fact that the video does not mention the Solidarity trade union in any way. According to the Chair of the Polish Committee for European Integration, Mikolaj Dowgielewicz, this is like showing France's history with no mention of the French Revolution.
