Over 1 M Bulgarians don't have health insurance, data from the "Open Society" Foundation reveals.

One third of those without health coverage are young people, below the age of 30, mostly people without high school diplomas and the majority of them are Roma.

In a poll conducted by the Foundation the main reason for people to not pay for health insurance is unemployment, followed by the need to make additional contributions from their own pockets to the health insurance funds.

About one third of those polled say they never had insurance while one fourth have been without one in the last 7 to 10 months.

84% of those without insurance have not been to a doctor in the last 12 months and 95% have not visited a hospital.

31% of the poll's participants say the health system needs to be the first one to be reformed followed by the justice system.
