Bulgaria Foreign Affairs Minister, Ivaylo Kalfin, has arrived in Madrid for the celebrations marking the 60th anniversary of the Council of Europe (CoE).
Foreign Ministers and representatives of forty-seven countries, the members of the CoE, will gather in Spain's capital Tuesday to participate in the 119th session of the Councils' Committee of Ministers.
The current condition of democracy, human rights and European cultural identity are some of the issues on the agenda of the meeting.
Spain will pass the chairmanship of the CoE Committee of Ministers to Slovenia, which will head the organization over the next six months. On May 7 Bulgaria marked the 17th anniversary since its accession to the Council of Europe.
The Council of Europe is the oldest international organisation working towards European integration, having been founded in 1949. It has a particular emphasis on legal standards, human rights, democratic development, the rule of law and cultural co-operation. It has 47 member states with some 800 million citizens.
